Precautions to be taken before going on holiday
THE Garda Siochana at Henry Street Station are offering advice to homeowners before they go off on their summer holidays. They advise to make the home look like someone is living in it.
“Don’t close your curtains in the daytime as this shows that the house is empty. Use automatic timer switches to turn on the lights when it gets dark.
“Cancel any milk or newspaper deliveries, get An Post Mailminder to hold on to your post until you get home and avoid discussing holiday plans where strangers may hear details of your absence from your home.”
The gardai advise cutting the lawn before taking off on holiday and make arrangements for it to be cut again if going away for a long period.
“Park your car in front of your house or get a neighbour to park their car there occasionally when you are away. Ask your neighbour to check your home every now and then as well and leave a contact number with them in case of emergency.
“It is advisable to leave important documents and valuable items with other family members, hide away car keys, laptops, jewellery, play stations etc or leave with family members:
“Put pedal cycles or similar items in the house, rather than leave them in a shed: Ensure that all outside doors and windows are locked and make sure the burglar alarm is set:
Spend a few minutes before departing on holiday, checking that you have done all you had to do and taken everything you need to take, with you.
Canal bank burglary
On Thursday last (May 20), at approximately 2.20pm a man who was walking along the Park Canal, close to the boathouse at the University of Limerick, was approached by two men who threatened him and searched for the camera he was carrying. He was pushed to the ground by one of the men while the other threatened to punch him if he did not hand over the camera.
When he did so they took off.
The gardai say they do not have a very good description of the culprits and they are appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time to help them in identifying them.
“Please give Henry Street Garda Station a call – we are taking this opportunity to warn anyone who uses the area for walking or jogging to always be on the alert for undesirables hanging around and if they do see someone that they think is up to no good, not to hesitate in ringing the gardai straight away”.
