TOP former model and Xposé TV presenter Glenda Gilson is eyeing up budding models around Limerick, as she launches Specsavers’ nationwide search for the Irish Spectacle Wearer of the Year 2010. The brunette bombshell is helping Specsavers search to find ordinary Irish people who look extraordinary in their glasses, as a necessity or even simply for fashion purposes.
Glenda says “As a presenter for Xposé, I have to stay on top of all the current trends. Wearing glasses for fashion is very in right now, as seen on everyone from Alexa Chung to Chloe Sevigney and Johnny Depp, whose glasses have become their trademark look.”
She continues “I’m really excited about my involvement with this year’s Irish Specsavers Spectacle Wearer of the Year competition and to promote glasses, not just as an optical necessity, but as a fashion accessory. I’m also looking forward to seeing what Irish fashionistas can bring to this international competition, with their ‘Specsy’ style.”
Every year, Specsavers scours Ireland and countries across Europe to find the guys and girls next door who look amazing in their specs. The competition is open to men and women aged 16 and over, who are either current specs wearers or wear glasses for fashion purposes.
Ann Power, store director for Specsavers in Crescent Shopping Centre and Cruises Street, Limerick says “We see so many people in the store who look absolutely amazing in their glasses. The Irish Spectacle Wearer of the Year competition gives us the opportunity to shout about the talent right on our doorstep who wear their specs loud and proud – and who are great role models for younger specs wearers to aspire to.”
The Irish winner will be announced at the prestigious final in the Dundrum Town Centre, Dublin which will be compeered by Glenda. The winner will then go on to represent Ireland in the international final, held in London in November 2010. Limerick has a great history in this competition with previous Irish winners Nicola Bennett and Orla Duggan, both local girls, placing high in the international competition.
The winner of the Irish Specsavers Spectacle Wearer of the Year will receive a year’s representation with one of Ireland’s top model agencies – Assets – as well as an enviable photography portfolio with Ireland’s top fashion photographer, Lili Forberg, a 500euro shopping spree in the fashionista’s mecca, Dundrum Town Centre, a tempting goody bag from hair and make-up experts, Brown Sugar and a 250euro voucher for Specsavers.
