From the vineyard to the table

GILBEY’s of Ireland have brought us three wines to savour and enjoy over Summer in the continuation of the summer sizzlers featuring the best of wine at some of the keenest prices.

Here’s three for under €13, two of which are under a tenner.

St Hallett Poachers’ Blend 2005 – €12.49

Sauvignon, Semillon Riesling

Available from local independent retailers, St Hallett Poacher’s Blend, as hinted by its name, is a daringly fun and light-hearted blend with a twist in its tail! Undeniably fresh and lifted, this unpretentious wine is blended predominantly from Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc with a special proportion of Riesling added each vintage giving it unusual twist and crisp, citrus finish.

This wine really encompasses the Australian way of making wine without the over emphasis on big and bold flavours that sometimes overpower the beauty within the bottle. A well rounded wine that offers the discerning buyer something very decent at a great price.

Faustino VII Rioja 2008 (Blanco) €9.99

Available from Tesco, Supervalu, Dunnes and throughout a wide range of independent retailers, the Faustino range has been a flagship model for Spanish wine on the international market for years as they continue to produce quality and class at very reasonable prices.

An aroma that is both fruity and floral – on the palate, it is tasty in the mouth, rich in nuances, with a persistent aftertaste. You could say a little tangy.

Faustino VII Rioja 2008 (Tinto) €9.99

A blend of 95% tempranillo and 5% mazuelo, aged for 10 months in American oak from Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

This is a lively red with that packs an abundance of flavour. The aroma, which is very well defined, beautifully combines the vanilla from the oak with the freshness of the grapes.

On the palate it gives excellent balance in the mouth, velvety and elegant with a very intense, lasting finish.
