Ford boss now SIMI president 2010/ 11

EDDIE Murphy, chairman and managing director of Ford Ireland is the new president of the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI).

On his election at the AGM, Mr Murphy identified some of the main challenges for his tenure as president: “A key objective will be to ensure that 2011 will build on the growth that was experienced in the Irish car market this year, maintaining the momentum that was brought about by the scrappage scheme”.

“The car registration system in Ireland is ripe for change as it brings huge strain on both car dealers and the registration authorities for the first couple of months of the year,” he argued. “We have had this system for 23 years now and it is high time that we found a system that better meets the needs of motorists, the motor industry and Government.”

Eddie Murphy also raised the topic of re-registration of second-hand cars: “It makes common-sense to allow for the re-registration of cars from county to county. A change like this would be welcomed by car dealers and consumers alike.”
