Warning for ATM users

A WARNING has been issued by Gardaí to be alert when using ATM machines after an apparatus used to read bank cards was found in a shopping centre.

“Another apparatus has been found on an ATM machine at the bank in the Crescent Shopping Centre that is used to read the ATM card number when the card is put into the slot, or when the holder inputs their pin number”, said Sgt Liam Sheahan of Henry Street.

“On this occasion, the manager of the bank noticed there was a problem with the ATM and on attempting to fix it, noticed a panel was fixed to the front of the ATM, and behind this was a little camera glued to it”.

He explained that the camera captures the card number and the pin and these are used to create copies of cards.

“Pay attention to the front of the machine. If it has sticky residue on it or a loose panel, use a different machine and notify the bank manager.

“Also, examine the slot where the card is inserted for hidden devices. I would ask people not to remove any suspicious devices until the gardaí arrive”.
