Young Munster Women’s XV made history for the club last weekend when they claimed their first ever piece of silverware. The girls overcame a tightly fought game with Thurles RFC (8-3) to be crowned All-Ireland Shield Champions 2009-2010 in Dubarry Park Athlone on Saturday April 10.
Established just two seasons ago by Trish Montgomery, emotions were high at the whistle for all the team and background staff. Coach Eddie Montgomery was thrilled, “I am delighted for the girls, and so proud of them. They showed great defence and the whole panel’s work off the pitch got us here today. We are proud to deliver this for the club, and delighted to repay our Club President Ger ‘Mousey’ Hannon, and Eddie Fitzgerald from the Corner Flag Bar, to name just a few, for all their support and faith in this team”. Clubman Paul O’Connell commented that after only three seasons in existence, the achievement is ‘phenomenal’.
