THOUSANDS of runners have already signed up for the inaugural Great Limerick Run this May Bank Holiday weekend.
The organisers believe that the marathon will create massive positive national exposure for the city. Organiser Martin Tynan, said, “The aim is to get people up off the couch and make this as big an event as possible”.
John Cleary highlighted the charitable aspect of the Great Limerick Run. “We have three official partner charities Milford Hospice, Crumlin Children’s Hospital and St Gabriel’s Centre”.
According to John, a third of those already signed-up to compete are doing so on behalf of charity.
Corbally funnyman Karl Spain joked that he would compete in all three disciplines, the marathon, half-marathon and 10km run.
He encouraged people to take part: “Sure if you’re anyway fit at all after it you’ll end up being a Limerick hurler”.
The Great Limerick run has already entered partnerships with a national newspaper and a national radio station.
John Cleary also spoke about the importance of sports tourism to Limerick.
“With the numbers already registered, we are the fourth largest marathon in Ireland after the Cork, Dublin and Connemara runs, which is excellent for the first year”.
