Flat screen TV stolen from hotel

THE theft of large, flat screen televisions is increasingly common of late, and Gardaí are investigating what they call a “brazen crime” in which thieves stole a 60” set from a city hotel.

The theft occurred on Monday, March 8, between 8.30pm and 8.45pm when Gardaí say it appeared that the culprit, or culprits, gained entry to the South Court hotel in Raheen, through a rear exit fire door, proceeded upstairs and removed the 60” Sony TV.

They are then thought to have come downstairs with it and loaded it into a vehicle, described as a green Mazda which had the number plates covered.

“This is a really cheeky, brazen crime”, said sergeant Liam Sheahan.

“CCTV is being viewed to see if the culprits can be identified”.  Nobody has been arrested in relation to the theft, according to Roxboro Gardaí, who are looking for information from anyone who can help identify the culprits.

Warning against keeping cash at home

GARDAÍ at Henry Street are investigating a break-in to a house in Castletroy, in which a substantial amount of money was stolen, and are again warning against keeping cash in the home.

The incident occurred on Saturday March 6 between 5pm and 7.30pm, at a house in Elm Grove while it was unoccupied.

Thieves entered through an upstairs window and a silver Compaq laptop and a pink Dell Inspiron laptop were taken, as well as the large sum of cash.

“Keeping cash at home is not recommended”, said sergeant Liam Sheahan.
“The majority of people can only secure their homes to a certain level, a level that is not satisfactory to keep large sums of money. It amazes me that some people who keep too much money at home, do not even hide it. Most thefts of cash from homes are from the main bedroom, so please make sure that’s the last place to keep it”.

Woman robbed in own driveway

A CASTLECONNELL resident had an unnerving experience when she had her handbag snatched from her in her own driveway.

She was in the driveway of her Castleconnell home on Friday March 5 at around 10.30pm, when she was approached by a male in his mid twenties as she got out of her car. He walked up the driveway, covering his face with one hand, and grabbed the victim’s handbag from her shoulder, before running to a waiting car.

Some cash, credit cards and personal items were in the bag.
The culprit is described as about 5’4” in height, wearing a baseball cap and gloves.

The getaway car was described as dirty black.
“While this was a fairly unusual incident, we did have a few of these crimes in the recent past where females travelling on their own were followed home and their handbags robbed as they were getting out of their cars”, said sergeant Liam Sheahan of Henry Street Garda station.  “It’s something that all females should be aware of and always take care and attention that no one is following you, and the same applies when taking cash from an ATM machine”.

Castleconnell Gardaí are investigating and can be contacted on 061 377105.
