GARDAI in Limerick are questioning a second man in relation to the shooting dead of 35-year-old Daniel Treacy at the Topaz petrol station on the Ennis Road in Limerick on Monday morning. Mr Treacy, a bread delivery man delivering at the station just after 6am, was shot a number of times in the chest by an unmasked gunman just inside the door of the shop. The shooting carried out by the gunman, who was seen wearing a hoodie, was captured on CCTV as Mr Treacy bought coffee at the shop.
Gardai arrested a 29-year-old man shortly after the shooting and were said to be following a definite line of inquiry.
The second man is being held at Henry Street Garda Station under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007. The murder investigation was launched shortly after the incident and gardai are seeking information in relation to a red Toyota Corolla that was seen leaving the forecourt of the petrol station immediately after the killing. Gardai are searching for the vehicle with the registration of 96 LK 1814, as well as the murder weapon.
Although Mr Treacy’s brother, Owen, was linked with an ongoing vicious feud in the city in which over a dozen people have been killed, it is another incident involving another brother of Mr Treacy, that gardai suspect is linked with the latest shooting at the petrol station.
18-year-old Darren Coughlan died a number of days after he was attacked by a group of youths on the Old Cratloe Road in November 2005. Daniel Treacy’s brother, Richard (21), along with James Keane (21), Garryowen and Shane Kelly (22), St Mary’s Park pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Darren Coughlan and received lengthy prison sentence. Richard Treacy was given a six year jail term at the Central Criminal Court in July, 2007.
UPDATE – A burnt out car was discovered by gardai on Tuesday morning and it is believed to be connected with the shooting dead of Daniel Treacy. Gardai investigating the incident, who have two men detained at Mayorstone and Henry Street garda stations, sought information relating to a 96 LK registered red Toyota Corolla. They now believe this to have been used as the getaway car seen leaving the forecourt of the Topaz petrol station on the Ennis Road. The investigation is ongoing.
