SET aside an evening for a great concert from the Irish Chamber Orchestra when accordion/ violin duo Dermot Dunne and Katherine Hunka team up for an evening of classics at UCH, Thursday February 18, 8pm.
Three school choirs from the mid west, Laurel Hill, St Anne’s of Killaloe and Colaiste na Trocaire from Rathkeale, will join the orchestra on stage for what will be a unique and epic choral contribution.
Katherine Hunka is leader of the Irish Chamber Orchestra since 2002. She is a member of the celebrated Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and has worked with many orchestras throughout Ireland and the UK.
She was the one who gave the world première of Britten’s Double Concerto with violinist Philip Dukes at the Aldeburgh Festival, having made her debut recital in the Wigmore Hall with pianist Sophia Rahman. Hunka subsequently released a CD of works by Elgar and Kreisler, while broadcasts include BBC Radio 3, Classic FM, Lyric FM and Swiss Radio.
Dermot Dunne has come along way since winning the RTE Musician of the Future competition in 1996. He appears regularly as a soloist at venues and festivals nationwide and is no stranger to the ICO.
Dunne has also worked with the Ulster Orchestra, RTE Concert Orchestra and National Youth Orchestra, touring across Europe and the Ukraine performing music from Bulgarian folk to Argentine tangos. His Latin group Lunfardia is another interest.
The ICO’s programme features baroque classics from Vivaldi, magic from Mozart and passion from Piazzolla, and the Colaiste na Trocaire composition, The Music in Me, choir(s) tutored by the orchestra’s education officer Kathleen Turner.
