Two solicitor brothers from one of the county’s best known political and sporting families have taken the bold step of establishing a new practise for the City on the premise that even in a downturn there are considerable opportunities. Leaving secure jobs and starting a new business in recessionary times is a move that many would be daunted by but not Herbert brothers John (pictured left) and Turlough (right),
whose practice, Herbert & Company, is based at Park House, Arthur’s Quay, Limerick.
Well known across Limerick and the Midwest region for their sporting prowess, their late father Mick’s political and hurling exploits and landmark family public house on the N7 Limerick to Dublin road at Sallymount, Castleconnell, the brothers have backed in their own ability by establishing the city’s newest legal practice.
“The recession is obviously having a severe bearing on many people’s lives and their business, but it also brings opportunities as the general public and business community re-evaluate services, including legal advisors. Right now people are looking around more than ever; they’re looking for competitive rates, experience and quality of service and we tick all those boxes,” said Turlough.
“Both John and I have been working with established firms in Limerick and Nenagh, respectively, across all aspects of legal services, and we just felt the time was right for a fresh start. Some might say that it’s not the right time to do this but in our mind there’s no time like the present and we are happy to say that it has been a very good start.”
Turlough is particularly well known from his exploits on the hurling field and was a member of the Limerick senior hurling panel from 1993 to 1996.
John won All-Ireland colleges with Flannan’s in Ennis, Co Clare and his sporting prowess extended to the boxing ring where he won the British and Irish Universities Heavyweight title twice while at UCD in the late 1980s. He also played underage and senior hurling with Ahane, as well as in the Fitzgibbon Cup with UCD.
Their father, Mick Herbert also wore the green jersey of Limerick, in the 1947, ’48 and ’49 championships before a serious injury ended his career. He was elected as a Fianna Fail TD in the Limerick East constituency three times and also served in the European Parliament. John and Turlough’s mother Brid (nee Nash) is a native of Oola, Co. Limerick.
The brothers’ new firm is a full service legal practice, specialising in civil and criminal litigation, conveyancing, probate, and family law. While their offices are based in Limerick, their client base and service extends into counties Clare and Tipperary.
“We are very proud to witness the family name over two businesses in Limerick. The pub is with our family since 1867 and we believe that our legal firm will also be a success, despite the times we are in. Definitely there are challenges out there for the legal sector but our offering is sufficiently expert and competitively price to thrive,” said John.
