Sam Barry battled hard this morning over 154 minutes of tennis in an attempt to overturn his British opponent, Oliver Goulding, in the second round of the Australian Open Junior draw. However, a first set tie break win (7-6) to the Limerick man could not be capitalised upon and Barry lost the second (3-6) and third (4-6) sets and bowed out of the competition having still made Irish history.
Barry won 91 points in the match but the 104 points won by his British counterpart edged the result for the 16-year-old who now advances to play Australian James Duckworth in the third round.
The Limerick man’s luck ran out in the latter part of this morning as his doubles dream with New Zealander Ben MacLachlan evaporated as they fell to a straight sets loss to Liang-Chi Huang and Yasutaka Uchiyama.
