A 27-year-old man who received a 10-month prison sentence last week for snatching a handbag from an old-age pensioner, was before Limerick District Court charged with another alleged robbery of an elderly lady at St Michael’s Church, Denmark Street, recently.
Michael Power, with an address at Fairgreen, Ballysimon, was in court seeking bail on the theft and robbery charges while currently serving a prison sentence.
Defence solicitor Ted McCarthy, stated to the court that after an initial application for bail was refused at Limerick District Court, it was subsequently granted in the High Court.
However, Inspector Seamus Gallagher addressed the court where evidence was offered in an objection to the bail application.
Lodging the objection under Section 2 of the Bail Act 1997, the gardai noted that while on bail in previous matters, the accused committed similar type offences and stated that it was their “belief that further similar crimes would be committed if granted bail”.
Judge Aeneas McCarthy, satisfied by the submission of the gardai, refused bail, stating that “the accused is a confessed heroine addict and had previously committed crimes while on bail”.
The case was adjourned until December 30 next when the directions of the DPP are expected, with the accused to appear via video link from Limerick Prison.
