Irish entrepreneur’s Joe O’Donovan and Paul O’Beirne from Callan Technology recently picked up the National Enterprise Award for 2009 in Dublin Castle.
Both men were recognised for their entrepreneurial skills in identifying and developing a business opportunity, which has reaped success for the Shannon based company.
Callan Technology was established in 2001 when the existing owners (a US multinational) were planning to close the Ennis business and move production to the Czech Republic. Seeing an opportunity, Joe and Paul purchased the DC Servo Motor product range, thus securing the future of the company. Immediately, both men set about putting a new business strategy in place which would grow the company’s business in international markets.
This strategy included investment in a new 5000 sq ft factory in Shannon Industrial Estate, an R&D focus for product development and the establishment of international distributors for their products. Today Callan Technology is an ISO 9001:2008 certified company exporting their industrial DC Servo Motors product range to 26 countries world-wide. The company successfully competes in niche industry segments such as industrial wood and metal work machinery and satellite antenna tacking devices.
Speaking about the company, Joe O’ Donovan (MD) says “At Callan Technology, we believe it is important to continually keep looking forward in order to be able to identify new opportunities. Just recently we have worked with a postal sorting machine manufacturer in Germany, where we were able to provide them with our motors to achieve their target. Our flexible approach and efficient turnaround time on customised units has successfully won Callan Technology many contracts over our competitors”.
