Rats alive in city housing estate

AN infestation of rats at a Ballinacurra Weston home is claimed to have led to the illness of the occupant, who has lived there for 46 years.

However, the environment section of the council have said that tens of thousands of euro have been spent this year alone, on clean-ups in the area.

Christopher Keane of Beech Grove Avenue, told the Post that for the last five years he has suffered rats entering his home, and claims that he has spent €5,000 euro in attempts to keep them away. He claims that city council have not sent any representatives out to check the situation.

“People have been dumping hundreds of bags of rubbish at the quarry behind my house for years”, said Mr. Keane, who lives alone. “The house is owned by the corporation but they haven’t done anything for me, even though I have been in touch with them for years.

“The Health Board have been very helpful and sent a guy out to get rid of the rats, but they keep coming back. I spent €5,000 filling in holes and doing up the house to keep them away, but it has been no use.

I have been out of work sick because of them.

“About three years ago, the corporation came out and built a railing behind the houses, but they never put it behind my house so it is exposed to the rubbish”.

A spokesperson for Limerick City Council told the Post: “Limerick City Council Environment department has spent tens of thousands of euros during 2009 in the collection of waste and general clean-ups in the Ballinacurra Weston area.

“Officials of the environment section of the council patrol the area for litter a number of times daily.

“In relation to this case, the council environment inspector is in the process of examining the complaint and will make every effort to resolve the matter”.
