Rats alive in city housing estate

AN infestation of rats at a Ballinacurra Weston home is claimed to have led to the illness of the occupant, who has lived there for 46 years.

However, the environment section of the council have said that tens of thousands of euro have been spent this year alone, on clean-ups in the area.

Christopher Keane of Beech Grove Avenue, told the Post that for the last five years he has suffered rats entering his home, and claims that he has spent โ‚ฌ5,000 euro in attempts to keep them away. He claims that city council have not sent any representatives out to check the situation.

โ€œPeople have been dumping hundreds of bags of rubbish at the quarry behind my house for yearsโ€, said Mr. Keane, who lives alone. โ€œThe house is owned by the corporation but they havenโ€™t done anything for me, even though I have been in touch with them for years.

โ€œThe Health Board have been very helpful and sent a guy out to get rid of the rats, but they keep coming back. I spent โ‚ฌ5,000 filling in holes and doing up the house to keep them away, but it has been no use.

I have been out of work sick because of them.

โ€œAbout three years ago, the corporation came out and built a railing behind the houses, but they never put it behind my house so it is exposed to the rubbishโ€.

A spokesperson for Limerick City Council told the Post: โ€œLimerick City Council Environment department has spent tens of thousands of euros during 2009 in the collection of waste and general clean-ups in the Ballinacurra Weston area.

โ€œOfficials of the environment section of the council patrol the area for litter a number of times daily.

โ€œIn relation to this case, the council environment inspector is in the process of examining the complaint and will make every effort to resolve the matterโ€.
