WEEK two of the AIL is down for decision this weekend and while some Limerick sides will be looking for a first win, some will be looking to build on a successful first outing.
Something had to give last Friday night as Limerick rivals Shannon and Garryowen faced off in the season opener. A tough and bruising encounter was decided in high drama.
Tadhg Bennett looked to have won the day for Shannon when he converted David Quinlan’s 80th minute try. Shannon had more of the possession and arguably played more of the rugby. However, the game is not over until the referee blows the whistle and Garryowen manoeuvred their way downfield before Willie Staunton was on hand to drop a winning goal. The scenes of joy at the final whistle were to be seen to be believed and the contest as a whole bodes well for the season ahead. With a win under their belts the light blues now head to Blackrock this weekend looking for the best possible start to the season. Shannon on the other hand will look to a home game against St Mary’s to make their mark. St Mary’s however will be no easy ask as the Blues from Dublin recorded a fine victory over Clontarf last week.
UL Bohemians started the new campaign at Thomond Park last Saturday, but were unable to secure a much needed home win. With so many local derbies and tough Dublin away trips home form will be crucial to secure top four status. The 8-3 loss does not tell the full story however as UL Bohs were short at number 10 and also lacked a natural goal kicker. Signs during the game however showed that UL Bohs might just be a surprise packet this year. Keep an eye out too for prop Kilcoyne. With props in short supply these days, the Bohs man might be wearing another red jersey in years to come.
Speaking of up and coming talent. Young Munster, with a massive performance from Aaron Carroll and Thomond with a majestic display from Declan Cusack both won their first games. Bruff were on the winning side too, but Old Crescent failed to take a win from their trip to Belfast.
The tie of this weekend is hard to pick. Cork Con and UL Bohs will be a good game but if you are not able to travel, Thomond versus DCU over in Woodview would be worth a watch.
