FROM a small store in the Corn Market area of Limerick City, Hegarty Metals commenced trading in non-ferrous scrap metals in 1955. Over the years the firm expanded into the ferrous metals area and in 1984 moved to its present site on the Ballysimon Road.
The company currently handles approx. 50,000 tonnes of scrap metal annually. The majority of the metals they process are exported to foundries where they are melted down and new metal products are manufactured.
The ferrous metals (iron & steel) are exported directly from Limerick Port on ships while the non-ferrous metals (copper, aluminium, stainless steel..etc..) are shipped to customers worldwide in containers.
Looking to the future, more stringent environmental legislation, contraction of the manufacturing sector and an increase in metals coming from domestic waste streams will present some interesting challenges for the company.
However, the management of waste has now become a core issue for the Irish economy and they welcome the opportunity to offer their services and experience in the management of waste metals to Irish industry, local authorities and the general public.
For over 50 years, Hegarty Metals have provided a nationwide metal recycling service from their base in Limerick and look forward to another 50 years of service to their customers and suppliers.
LOCAL AUTHORITIES
Hegarty Metals provide a metal recycling service to public amenity sites for Local Authorities and Waste contractors. This service includes the provision of tin can banks, aluminium cans banks, large skips for white goods and general scrap metal waste. They can also collect loose loads of material from amenity sites using their trucks which are fitted with crane mounted grabs.
DESTRUCTION AND DISMANTLING OFF-SITE
Hegarty Metals offer an on site destruction and dismantling service for large pieces of plant or industrial structures. Large silos, oversize tanks and other exceptional items can be processed with little difficulty. The hydraulic cleaver fitted to their Fuchs MHL350 wheeled machine is the perfect tool to cut and remove steel in difficult to reach locations.
SKIP SERVICE
Hegarty Metals provide Roll-On-Roll-Off type skips in all shapes and sizes from 19m3 to 30m3. They can also supply smaller chain lift type skips ranging in size from 5m3 to 10m3. These skips are available in open top styles or can be supplied with locking lids to protect the contents or to prevent unauthorised disposal of rubbish in the skip. Smaller square bins of approx. 2m3 are also available by request for high value metals or for customer sites where space is limited.
COLLECTION OF BULK SCRAP MATERIALS
A fleet of modern vehicles fitted with grab loading cranes are at the disposal of their customers for the collection of all types of scrap metal waste. A spokesperson for the company told the Limerick Post that, “their articulated trucks are particularly useful for light bulky material”. Large machinery and oversize materials can be transported to their site on their low loader artic trailers for dismantling and processing.
