UL to text students their college offers

IN a bold move to move with the times of their target market, the University of Limerick will use Saadian’s messaging technology to inform 3,000 students annually that they have received a CAO place in its college.

Irish owned software firm Saadian Technologies specialises in SMS (texting) services for public and private enterprises through its product, Business2Mobile.

Joachim Barnet, Office Manager, Undergraduate Admissions Office, University of Limerick explains, “Text messaging is the language of school leavers who are our potential undergraduates so it makes sense to use this text messaging service to communicate with them. The challenge we have is the tight timeframe where between when CAO offers are issued (mid August) and the orientation programme for new students (start of September) annually. The text message includes a web link which brings them to the orientation website with details on the orientation programme and they can also start organising campus accommodation early if needed.”

NIB will not join NAMA

National Irish Bank this week said that it will not be participating in NAMA.

CEO of the bank, Andrew Healy said: “National Irish Bank is part of a strong, well capitalised European banking Group and we don’t have reason to seek to participate in NAMA.”

This week the bank reported a pre-tax loss of 341million euro for the first half of 2009 as the bank set aside loan impairment charges of 379million euro.

The bank said that one third of its loan book was made up with mortgages and they ‘considered it satisfactory’. It says that fewer than 100 customers are in arrears for over 90 days.
