THE Church Classics concert series will return to St. Mary’s Cathedral on Thursday 20 August with a romantic, seasonal recital in The Last Rose of Summer. Taking place at 8pm that evening, the night will feature Elizabeth Cooney on violin, Russian born pianist Hanna Shybayeva and soprano Sylvia O’Brien.
Elizabeth Cooney, who played to a full houses in autumn’s National Symphony Orchestra tour, will perform virtuosic violin works by Kreisler, Ravel, as well as Shostakovich’s The Romance from the Gadfly and Prokofiev‘s March from The Love for Three Oranges.
Soprano Sylvia O’Brien will sing arias from La Traviata, Louise and Candide as well as songs by Mendelssohn and Poulenc. Violinist and singer will be accompanied Shybayeva on the ivories for works specific to their instruments.
Cooney has just completed nationwide tours with guitarist Redmond O’Toole and with her piano trio, The Syrius Trio.
Sylvia O’Brien is a regular soloist with the NSO, RTECO, and the Orchestra of St. Cecilia. This year to date she has performed in both the Sligo Vogler Festival and the West Cork Chamber Music Festival.
Hanna Shybayeva, now living in The Hague, is a prizewinner in a number of competitions in Europe and the USA and has performed with major orchestras in Europe.
“This combination of stunning musicians performing in the beautiful acoustic of St. Mary’s Cathedral should not be missed by music lovers,” says organiser Classical Links.
Church Classics in Limerick are supported by the Arts Council, Limerick City Council, Shannon Development, Carlton Castletroy Park Hotel and Foras Eireann. Tickets at the door or book in advance for Thursday August 20, 8pm at Belltable box office, 59 O’Connell Street.
