207 and 107 engine awards for Peugeot

PEUGEOT’s 1.6 litre petrol engine has taken top honours for the third consecutive year in the 1.4-litre to 1.8-litre category at the 2009 International Engine of the Year Awards. The 1.0 litre petrol engine, fitted to the Peugeot 107, also won its category, 100 points ahead of the second placed Smart diesel engine.

Introduced in 2007 on the Peugeot 207, the 1.6 petrol engine was designed by PSA Peugeot in co-operation with the BMW Group.

Today, alongside its 1.4 litre petrol sister, developed using the same technology, the engines feature in more than 12 Peugeot models across the 207, 308 and new 3008 Crossover ranges and deliver between 95 to 175bhp.

Equipped with the latest technological features, the engine range improves fuel efficiency and reduces emissions by around 10 per cent compared with the previous generation. By 2010, 75 per cent of all Peugeot vehicles will be equipped with 1.4-litre to 1.6-litre petrol engines.

Peugeot’s 107 is equipped with a 1.0 litre petrol engine, weighing just 67kg, one of the lightest automotive engines ever to be developed. The compact unit, built by Toyota, offers an ultra-efficient fuel consumption rating of 4 litres/100km, while emitting only 109g/km of CO2. Weight-saving technologies applied include an all-aluminium construction, an extra-small cylinder bore-to-bore distance and the innovative use of a resin throttle body and fuel delivery pipe.

Explaining why so many judges backed the 1.0 litre yet again for the third year in a row, Christophe Congrega from L’Automobile Magazine in France said, “This three-cylinder has all the punch and torque to make city driving fun. But at the same time, its fuel consumption and emissions are incredibly low.”  Adams of Glin is County Limerick’s main Peugeot dealer.
