OTHER than John Perry’s free concert and the Mozart nights in Georgian house, there is much else to anticipate in Summer Music on the Shannon (SMS) Festival in terms of performance.
Look ahead to a Youth Opera production of composer Carl Davis’ The Mermaid on Friday August 1, 8pm. It’s followed on Saturday August 15, again 8pm, by The Sound of Silence, homage to the music that played out the movies of the silent screen area.
“The Mermaid is a musical adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s fairytale,” elaborates Emma Foote of host venue, UCH. “The BAFTA winning composer Carl Davis, as SMS artist in residence, will work with the opera students on this production. It will be directed by John Gardyne who has worked extensively for leading companies in the UK and abroad, including the Covent Garden Festival, Welsh National Opera, Glyndebourne Opera and in London’s West End Theatres”.
From opera to orchestral. The Sound of Silence follows last year’s successful performance of Charlie Chaplin:
“Carl Davis allows young and old alike to rediscover the hilarity of Chaplin’s classics on a huge cinema screen, while enjoying the unparalleled sound of the score performed by a live orchestra.”
