Kennedy for Kilkee concert

SINGER/ songwriter Brian Kennedy will give a concert at St Senan’s Church Kilkee on Friday July 31, 8pm for Kilkee Civic Trust.

 Kennedy has been one of Ireland’s ambassadors on the world stage, being author of a couple of best-selling novels and numerous short stories as well as an award winning musician.

Among its many activities, Kilkee Civic Trust has taken on the promotion of several musical events over the last number of years, hosting the likes of musician and composer Micheál O’Suilleabháin, mezzo soprano Edel O’Brien and the Irish Chamber Orchestra, as part of its summer concert schedule.  This Friday 31 is Brian Kennedy’s second visit to Kilkee with a fundraising concert and he’s sure to pack out St Senan’s again.

Members of the Munster Rugby Supporters Choir will perform the opening part of the concert and join him for a couple of numbers at the end of the night.

A limited number of tickets will be available on the door on the night and you can contact Kilkee Civic Trust for advance booking.

 

Brass bands swell for St Vincent’s

A 100 strong corps of brass and reed musicians in concert is the autumn concert planned at the Augustinian’s Church, O’Connell Street on Saturday August 1. The 5.30pm event will see St John’s Brass & Reed Band host CJ Kickham Brass Band, Tipperary and the Ipswich Hospital Band unite in harmony and high notes to raise funds for Daughters of Charity Services, St Vincent’s at Lisnagry.

THE last White House Poetry Revival night before the August weekend Poetry Celebration is Wednesday July 29. At 9pm in this open house session, the Limerick based Billy Mills is guest writer. He works for a leading scientific publisher and is founder and co-editor with Catherine Walsh of hardPressed Poetry and the Journal.

MIlls has read his work widely at festivals and universities internationally. His books include Genesis and Home (hardPressed Poetry, 1985), Triple Helix (hardPressed Poetry 1987), Letters From Barcelona (Dedalus 1990), Properties Of Stone (Writers Forum, London 1996), 5 Easy Pieces (Shearsman, Plymouth, 1997), Horace: 5 Traductions (Form Books, London, 1997),  A Small Book of Songs (Wild Honey, Dublin 1999), What is a Mountain? (hardPressed Poetry 2000) and Logical Fallacies (hardPressed Poetry 2004).

His new collection, Lairs/ Manes is published by Shearsman this Summer.

 

Scoil Merriman 2009

ENNIS is the base, Glór the centre, for Scoil Merriman 2009. The dates of Sunday August 16 to Saturday 22 have been announced to play out the theme of Are we There Yet: Facing The Future Anew.

The director is Limerick man Bob Collins and the panel will comprise of historian Diarmuid Ferriter, Queen’s professor of Law Lord Paul Bew, Noel Dorr, formerly of Foreign Affairs and Brigid Laffan of the College of Human Sciences in UCD. There are other speakers of note engaged for the seven days and poetry readings at midday will host John F Deane, Enda Wyley, James Harpur and Ailbhe Ní Ghearbhuigh. 

Club Merriman will take place in The Old Ground Hotel and Temple Gate Hotel on various nights.
