McCourt dies aged 78

UPDATE – Frank McCourt, the author of Angela’s Ashes, has died aged 78 after suffering from meningitis and having been diagnosed with Melanoma.

Last May, while McCourt was on a Pacific cruise, he suffered a seizure. He was taken to a New York Hospital and diagnosed with melanoma.

The author achieved worldwide recognition with “Angela’s Ashes,” a story of his childhood years in Limerick that was made into a movie and in 1997 won the onetime schoolteacher a Pulitzer Prize.

Malachy McCourt was quoted in newspapers saying that his 78-year-old brother, “was not expected to live”.
