Concert performances for SMS festival

2009’s Summer Music on the Shannon Festival opens with a free concert for all hosting world-class musicians. The Piano Man will take place University Concert Hall on Saturday August 1 with acclaimed pianist John Perry headlining a large-scale production with special guests.

This is only one in a series of performances of interest to the community far beyond the prodigies attending this academy of masterclasses.

“Indulge your senses with a programme of music including Schubert’s Fantasia, piano for four hands,” invites the concert hall. “Beethoven’s Piano Sonata in D and Brahms’ Piano Quartet in A major complete the programme”.

For two weeks, until Sunday August 16, audiences can take their pick from a variety of delightful performances by international musicians, together with the students of this year’s Summer Music on the Shannon programme.

This could be your opportunity to join in the bicentennial tributes to composers Joseph Haydn and Felix Mendelssohn. Taking place on Friday August 7 under the title Passion & Fantasy, this concert will feature Haydn’s Symphony, La Passione. On Sunday 16 the finale concert, A Homage to Mendelssohn, will showcase the composer’s  Reformation Symphony.

Other highlights of this year’s SMS Festival are the Youth Opera Production of composer Carl Davis’ The Mermaid on Friday August 14 and on Saturday August 15, The Sound of Silence.
