University Concert Hall has announced that the artist in residence for its Summer Music on the Shannon (SMS) 16th International Music School and Festival will be the Bafta Award winner, Carl Davis. He is one of the world’s leading composers in genres as diverse as ballet to film, and 2009 will be Davis’ second visit to the SMS annual school. There are always grounds for major hoopla around this July-August four weeks of scholarship and concerts.
“A dazzling array of talented musicians, many of which are internationally renowned, will arrive in Limerick to engage with the inspiration and excitement generated by students of all ages,” says Michael Murphy of UCH. “Lessons, classes, rehearsals, trad music, recreation options and performing opportunities for all SMS participants will take place daily from July 20 to August 16”.
Founded by Robert Creech, the school’s mission is “to provide access to excellent in music performance”.
Last year, Carl Davis conducted the SMS Orchestra through the music for two classic Charlie Chaplin films as well as overseeing the production of the opera Peace.
For his prodigious contribution to film, television and theatre, he received a Special Lifetime Achievement Award from BAFTA in 2003 and was subsequently honoured with a CBE (Hon.) SMS students work with the best!
Distinguished American pianist John Perry also returns to SMS to give a week long series of master classes. Currently Piano Professor at the Colburn School in Los Angeles, Mr. Perry is acclaimed as a performer, teacher and for his master classes.
