A DELEGATION from Limerick traveled to Brussels this Thursday to put the situation of terrified residents and burnt out houses to the European Parliament Petitions Committee.
The petition is hosted by Kathy Sinnott, vice president of the Committee, who brought the Petitions Committee to Weston Gardens last year on a fact finding mission.
The Weston Gardens petition was submitted by Cathal McCarthy, an Independent Council candidate.
Mr. McCarthy’s petition explains the situation of Weston Gardens, and highlights the plight of areas in Limerick that are suffering the harassment of criminal gangs and being neglected in urban renewal programs. The petition will be heard in the Petitions Committee in Brussels on this Thursday..
Commented Kathy Sinnott, “We have to shore up our crime fighting capacity and secure our neighbourhood, and in particular protect the elderly who are vulnerable to harassment”.
“But we will not make headway until we get to the root cause of the deaths of Roy Collins, Shane Geoghegan and others, the burnt out houses, the terrorised neighbourhood and the drug culture that fuels it.
“It is time for everyone who uses illegal drugs, smokes illegal cigarettes or buys goods on the black market to realise that their euro are supporting a criminal world that causes suffering and loss. When you see the devastation, it is time to decide to have no part in it,” added Mrs. Sinnott.
Speaking in the aftermath of the shooting of Limerickman Roy Collins, she said:
“Finding a way to contain people who openly threaten violence is long overdue,” said Kathy. Sinnott, MEP for Munster, speaking from her constituency.
“I know that the Gardai will do all they can but I would call on the Government to reconsider all cuts and delays on funding to the Gardai, to increase their presence and fully equip our Gardai for the work they have to do”.
