Six men and Six women are being held in custody this Tuesday morning and are being questioned in relation to the unlawful killing of Garryowen FC rugby player Shane Geoghegan. Five of the 12 are being held amongst a number of garda stations spanning three counties in the Mid West region and one is being questioned at a station in Dublin.
Gardai surveyed an area in Tipperary before making the arrests in which a number of items associated with drug use and a quantity of heroin were also seized in the raid.
The 12 can be held for a period of 24 hours from the time of their initial arrest but further applications can be made to extend this period of detention.
Last November and in a case of mistaken identity, Shane Geoghegan was shot nine times with a Glock semi-automatic 9mm pistol when he tried to run from his killer just hours after watching Ireland beat Canada at Thomond Park. Shane had been with friends earlier in the evening and was returning home when his murder occurred just yards from his home.
At the end of last January, two men were arrested and held for a period of time under section 30 of the Offences against the State Act on suspicion of withholding information relating to the murder on November 8 of last year. The two were later released without charge but a file was sent to the DPP in relation to their arrests.
