Caherdavin man conned in internet car fraud

Yet again, people are being warned to be extremely vigilant when completing transactions via the internet following another scam.

Recently a Caherdavin man was conned when he was contacted by a woman, looking to buy his car which was advertised for sale on the web.

After settling on a price of 4,000 euro for the car, the Limerick man received a cheque in the post for 7,300 euro, having provided details of his address to the prospective buyer.

It was said that the excess amount of 3,300 euro was to pay for the cost of shipping the car to the woman’s home in Finland.

When the man lodged the cheque it was discovered that it was a forgery. The shipping company then proceeded to contact the local man looking for payment, which he could not provide.

Having given his address to an unknown person, the man now fears that the shipping company will arrive at his home looking for his car.

This kind of internet fraud is a rapidly growing problem and web users are warned not to give away personal details before ensuring that the interested party is genuine.

There have been several instances of internet fraud in the Limerick area over the last few months, with some having lost substantial amounts of money.
