Ted Slade Award 2009

REWARDING times in the poetry stakes. Ted Slade Award is an annual award made to someone who has made an outstanding contribution to poetry over a long period of time. This year’s is made to Geoff Stevens,  editor of Purple Patch Magazine which he jointly founded in 1976. More information about this award can be found at

Two new online poetry courses came online this Monday February 9, the Poetry Foundation Course and Poetry Part 1 course.  
The next Poetry Part 2 course starts Monday 16 and there is still a couple of places on that course.

Jazz season Spring ‘09

The John Moriarty European Quartet opens the Spring 2009 Jazz season at Dolan’s Upstairs on Wednesday February 18.  Moriarty, an Irish guitarist, leads an international set comprised of Norwegians Daniel Formo (piano) and Hakaon Johansen (drums) and British bassist Phil Donkin.
Anticipate new compositions that “will sway between traditional and modern jazz styles”. Doors 8.30pm, all welcome.

Lunchtime Concerts at IWAM

THE Lunchtime Concert Series at the Irish World Academy of Music runs (usually) Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1.15pm to 2pm.  These concerts are free, short and open to all.
Located at the Performing  Arts Centre, Foundation Building at UL, the month of February has another four concerts to offer.
Tuesday 17: piano and piano accordion player Shane  Greene and Friends.
Wednesday  18: Gerry O’Connor on fiddle, Cathal McConnell on fiddle and Gilles le Bigot, guitar.
Tuesday 24:  Karen Tweed on piano accordion and Friends.
Thursday 26: Conor McCarthy, double bass player and student of MA in Classical String Performance.

New and selected poems

THE White House Poetry Revival guest for Wednesday February 18 is Mark Roper, 9pm open reading. Roper’s collections include The Hen Ark (Peterloo/Salmon 1990), which won the 1992 Aldeburgh Prize for best first collection; Catching The Light (Peterloo/Lagan 1997); a chapbook, The Home Fire (Abbey Press 1998) and Whereabouts (Peterloo/Abbey Press 2005).
He was editor of Poetry Ireland for 1999 and Roper’s Even So: New & Selected Poems was published by the Dedalus Press in Autumn 2008.
