A COMMITMENT has been given to Cllr Jim Long from Superintendent Ann-Marie McMahon of Roxboro Garda Station, that measures will be put in place to eradicate disruptive anti-social activity in the Baggott Estate and Rosbrien areas of the city.
As reported in the Limerick Post last week, local councillor Jim Long (FG,) called on city council to arrange for a garda presence in Baggott Estate, which, he said, “has become a ghetto from 9am ‘til dawn, with people drinking and getting up to all sorts of unacceptable behaviour, which is a nightmare for the local people – we must have a garda presence up there,” he insisted.
At a meeting of the Joint Policing Committee in City Hall this week, the councillor again raised the issue and said that neighbouring Rosbrien has also been hit with this “obnoxious” behaviour from gangs of youths roaming through Ballinacurra Weston and Rosbrien.
“I’m very glad to have secured a firm assurance from the superintendent that she is going to make the Baggot Estate a priority issue. She said she will monitor the situation and sort it out,” Cllr Long told this newspaper.
“As regards the gangs roaming Weston and Rosbrien, the city council and the gardai have disciplinary boards and the council’s enforcement officers will, once these gangs have been identified, warn their parents that they have responsibility for their minors, and if they do not take this on board, they will be faced with eviction from city council houses.
“I’m very glad, on behalf of the residents, to have been given these assurances and will continue to monitor the situation over the coming weeks”.
