Two Christmas crackers

-

IT’s all about the indulgence at Christmas and for some, we often have a tipple to celebrate. In that case, here’s two great wines, new world entrants, into an old world market, but certainly some that are worthy of investigation.

Looking to Australia, as many have in the past and present, you’ll find the diligence and care that has paid off in the making of these two great wines – at a super price too. St Hallett focuses on crafting full flavoured wines utilising the winery’s rich vein of old vines in a new world. This allows them to constantly develop and evolve their intimate approach to producing top quality wines. Gilbey’s of Ireland supplied the wines which are both available in O’Briens Wines at the Parkway Shopping Centre as well as a number of other local outlets.

St Hallett Poachers’ Blend 2006 – 12.99
Sauvignon, Semillon Riesling
As hinted by its name, St Hallett Poacher’s Blend is a daringly fun and light-hearted blend with a twist in its tail! Undeniably fresh and lifted, this unpretentious young wine is blended predominantly from Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc with a special proportion of Riesling added each vintage giving it unusual twist and crisp, citrus finish. This wine really encompasses the Australian way of making wine without the over emphasis on big and bold flavours that sometimes overpower the beauty within the bottle. A well rounded wine that offers the discerning buyer something very decent at a great price.

St Hallett Gamekeepers Reserve 2006 – 12.99
An Australian red – what more can be said only that it is sure to blow your socks off, but that is where this one is just a little different. From Barossa, this wine is certainly typical but with another dimension. It is packed is packed with Shiraz and Grenache and matching the uniqueness of the Poacher’s blend it includes tiny proportion of Touriga Nacional giving it a floral and spice finish. This wine will serve your Christmas festive fare very well and it’s balance and style is one that will compliment food of any sort. Keep an eye on this range as the price is key. A sub 15 euro bottle of wine, like the white above, are 10 a penny. In this case, it’s in a league of its own as a great buy for that very market price.
