Limerick Women’s and Schoolgirls Soccer League seeking an Angela Hearst comeback

The ladies of the LWSSL will take on Waterford this Saturday.

FOLLOWING on from last year’s narrow FAI Angela Hearst Interleague Cup penalty shootout defeat at the hands of the Eastern Women’s League, the Limerick Women’s and Schoolgirls Soccer League (LWSSL) have their eyes set on a comeback story.

This year’s 30-strong LWSSL side was picked after trials under the new management of Peadar Lyons, assistant manager Cllr Sarah Kiely, and coaches Tom Hickey, Mike Cooper, and David Tighe.

When asked about the team’s ambitions for the newly opened season, Lyons said that “the aim is to win the FAI Angela Hearst Cup and bring it back to Limerick”.

“But more importantly, building the right environment for girls/ladies football to keep progressing and laying the foundations for future generations of stars to come through is the ultimate goal”.

The LWSSL manager said “there is a wealth of talent in the Limerick region, and it’s our responsibility to manage these characters and help them to fulfil their potential.”

The LWSSL side started their 2024 campaign two weeks ago with a 5-0 domination of the Tipperary Senior District League.

Round two is set to take place this Saturday when they take on Waterford at the Granville Rangers AFC grounds (4pm).

Lyons is calling on crowds celebrating the Riverfest long weekend to get the traditional blue and white of Limerick on and support the team on their quest for the FAI Angela Hearst Interleague Cup.

Rebecca Horgan of Listowel Celtic – Player of the Match in last year’s final – has been selected to lead the charge this year as captain.

The squad is made up of players from 10 different clubs within the league, including Newtown Rovers, Moyross United, Bunratty, Listowel Celtic, Kilmallock, Mungret, Regional, Herbertstown, Lough Derg, and Aishling Annacotty.
