A LIMERICK group took home a national prize for their short film at this year’s Ireland’s Young Filmmaker of the Year awards.

Emerging Filmmakers Limerick took home the award for Best Group for ‘Rat King’ by Róisín Leavy-Sahin.

The film tells the story of a young boy who falls in love with a dead rat. It begins to rot him, setting off a frenzy in his village with disastrous consequences.

Meanwhile, Fiachra Cotter O’Culachain was crowned Ireland’s Young Filmmaker of the Year for his short film ‘Ivy’.

Based on his experiences with teenage romance, Ivy follows Hugh, a teen facing the struggles of life, which becomes much better when he meets Ivy, the new girl next door.

A total of 17 young filmmakers were honoured at Ireland’s Young Filmmaker of the Year awards this year, which were presented at Limerick’s Omniplex Cinema and Troy Studios, and were recorded to be broadcast on RTÉ2 and the RTÉ Player.

The second place award was secured by Leitrim native Olivia Louise Curto for her film, ‘Freequencies’, followed by Jake Dundon from Tipperary who scooped the third place award for his film adaptation of the ‘Only Nightmare I’ve Ever Had’.

Now in its 28th year, Ireland’s Young Filmmaker of the Year Awards, part of the Fresh International Film Festival, encourage young people to consider a career in filmmaking, as well as learning the art of visual storytelling. The awards aim to inspire and build Ireland’s film and television talent pool.
