LITTLE Limerick water baby Adam Slomian, who swims in St Gabriel’s hydrotherapy pool in Dooradoyle, has been honoured at the Water Babies Little Hero Awards.

Two-year-old Adam from Thomondgate was diagnosed with Down syndrome shortly after birth. His parents were initially taken aback, but they were determined to provide him with the best opportunities.

Adam’s journey with Water Babies began when he was just a few months old. Recognising the therapeutic benefits of swimming and hydrotherapy for Adam’s low muscle tone, his parents embraced his aquatic adventures wholeheartedly.

Through his weekly Water Babies classes, Adam has not only strengthened his body but has honed various water skills, guided by the patient teaching of instructor Yvonne Shanahan.

Despite taking a bit longer to grasp certain concepts, Adam’s progress is evident as he absorbs knowledge from his fellow little swimmers and his dedicated instructor.

His love for music during lessons and the incorporation of Lamh signs have further enriched his experience, enhancing his communication and understanding.

Adam’s confidence in the water knows no bounds, as he fearlessly dives into underwater swims with ease – earning him nickname of “our little fish” at home.

Moreover, his swimming journey has had a profound impact on his mother Naomi’s water confidence, who confronted her own water fears alongside Adam.

With each lesson, Naomi is growing more comfortable in the water, inspired by Adam’s bravery and determination.
